Default Extended Warranty

Warranty on the motor in my signature will expire in June. Yamaha sent me info on extending the warranty. Can this be purchased cheaper through a dealer, and if so who should I call.

Not sure about pricing, but before purchasing an extended warranty, get a copy of the contract and read it closely. Unless they have changed it recently to include and cover more stuff, the "exclusions" in the extended warranties do not cover MOST things that you would likely need to replace during it's lifetime. Extended warranties do not cover the same things as the initial factory warranty.

Things like water pumps, seals, gaskets, timing belts are not covered unless required as part of a "covered" repair. Did not even cover a starter motor or trim motor as they can "wear out". The only benefit I saw was maybe it could give some piece of mind and cover you in the rare case of a blown powerhead or lower unit. But it likely will not cover you,or eliminate repair expense for the usual stuff. I myself chose not to buy it.

Read it first before deciding.

MarkG...thanks for the heads-up of what is and is not covered. Will definitely get a copy of the extended warranty from Yamaha before any decision is made.

Do you know how many hours you put on per year. If it's just 50 hrs (average amount) I would pass on the warranty. However, if you are putting on 200-300 hrs per year I would consider it after I knew exactly what it covers.

Another way to deal with this is open up a separate bank account where you either put all the money this warranty will cost you or pay monthly into it. If something goes wrong with your outboard you have money to lean on.......if not you have a nice hidden savings account for whatever.

Bobby...Don’t think we have 100 hours in the almost 3 years since new. Probably have more hours on the kicker than the main motor.

I would say the extended warranty is purchased directly from Yamaha as you can take it to any authorized repair shop. Your 2019 9.9 may have a 5 year warranty, I know my 2019 SHO came with the extended warranty without any added cost to me.

Then, personally I would skip the warranty and bank the money for a vacation in 3 years instead.

You own a Yamaha, I would save the money and did. Since I switched to Yamaha over 10 years ago I havenít had any repair bills. Canít say that about the Mercís I owned.

Extended warranty is always a bad idea unless you are really strapped for cash and cannot afford the repairs. mostly semi shady business offering the coverage in my opinion
