Question May flyes

In the month of June I participate in a walleye tournament in the northern part of the province of Quebec and almost every year we are facing a massive may flyes hatch and whaen that happend we can't buy a walleye.

I would like to get advise on what to use to get them bite?

First you have to find a place where they are coming off the bottom of the lake. Or find some structure where they are being collected due to current, or wind.
They will 'black out" the screen from bottom to almost top when you find these places.

Two ways that I have had success were with suspended fish :
- Lindy rigging an air injected crawler on a really a long leader (6'-7')
- Pulling small spinner rigs (matching the hatch, size wise) behind boards through and around the clouds of hatching flies, for higher suspended fish. You'll have to experiment with depth.

When you catch them you usually get decent fish... and they'll be puking mustard yellow color puke from eating on the flies

I've found slip bobber rigs around the areas T Mac mentioned to be quite effective. Half a crawler or leech on 1/8 ounce jig or plain hook a foot or more off the bottom.

Think shallow. Not the water depth, but your lure depth. The fish are suspending to slurp up the bugs. You can use any presentation if you put it where the fish are eating. Bob

Good luck at the Festival du Doré André!

I have customers who live in Chapais and finish in the top 10 last year.

They bottom bounce leaches, 0.2-0.5 mph with leads up to 10-12 feet. Sometimes they add a small bead. Othertimes they use slow death.

Bonne Chance.

I've used white plastic with a lighter jig, tipped with half crawler. Had one mayfly hatch so bad, the walleyes were just under the surface.
