I agree, an electric trolling motor would be nice, but unfortunetly would not be practical in his particular situation.

"Just pick up a small inexpensive drift sock. Especially when back trolling just snap a drift sock on the bow eye of the boat and toss it into the water. The sock will fill with water and slow your boat nicely. By snapping onto the bow eye, on a short rope, you will not foul fishing lines or lures."

Neither of us had been around drift socks, they sounded like a pain, so were discounted. One with a short rope on the bow doesn't sound as bad as what my mind had conjoured up. That, or the bucket trick will have to be considered if the plate doesn't work.

When not in use, pull in the bag, roll it up and stow it away. After using the boat, hang up the sock and let it dry well before stowing it away.

Be safe

X2 on the drift sock. While not as cheap as a 5 gallon bucket, it folds flat and takes up almost no room. A 5 gallon bucket, on the other hand.......

What I did on the previous boat was keep a 5 gal bucket drilled full of 3/8" holes in the boat to slow me down. I kept an anchor in it so it wasnt a waste of space. It works but its more of a pain than a small trolling bag.

Cheap minn Kota drift sock on the front of the boat. Good thing to have in the boat any how in case the motor every goes out in inclement weather (it’ll keep the bow pointed into the wind).

Sky,
Have shorter straps or ropes on the smaller drift sock that is connected to the bow eye hole in the bow of the boat.

Have a longer 1/4 inch rope hooked to the small end of the bag and be allowed to drag along with the bag, with the free end of the rope hooked back to a bow cleat.

When you need to stow the bag, just pull n the center outside bag rope and pull the bag back, emptying the water from the bag as you do.

To relaunch the bag, simply flip the bag back into the water and the bag will fill and slow the boat.

Be safe

Putting it in neutral every so often is what he is doing now (we all do it at times), but that is a pain and he is hoping for a fix.

It sounds like the trolling plate he has ordered may be become a shop decoration if it will not work back trolling.
