When my brother-in-law was fishing the PWT, he learned on Lake Erie that at any water temperature above 45 degrees crankbaits, bottom bouncers, or other faster presentations were worth trying. Amateur me, I waited until the water reached 60 degrees, but I learned quickly.

I'm sure you could catch fish on anything at anytime but following the general advice of Al Linder and company it would go something like this. These reccomendations would vary based on the activity level of the fish etc. For example, it may make sense to Lindy Rig at 72 deg water temp if the fish are in-active.

1. ice out to 40 ..........Jigs
2. 40 to 50 ................Jigs
3. 50 to 60................ Lindy Rigging
4. 60 -70. .................Trolling Spinners on bottom bouncers or 3-way
5) 70 and up............. Trolling Crankbaits on 3-ways

One thing I've learned in fishing for walleye for the past 30+ years-there are no rules for catching walleyes. There may be some 'general guidelines', but I've seen them all broke, as well. There was a very hot crank bite over the weekend. The water temp was 34 degrees. Last year we were catching them on spinners during the last week of March. Water temp was sub 40 degrees.

Does anyone have any specific techniques they like in the ice out to 40 degree range when it comes specifically to a smaller river environment? My typical approach is the basic vertical jigging presentation(jig and minnow) although I sometimes wonder if this approach is a bit too "fast" when the bite is slow. I've attempted anchoring and pitching jigs, but I've had much less success doing this overall. I guess I'm asking for techniques for this cold water small river environment that may have a little more finesse to them.

Overall this is how I do it. Mainly fish large bodies of water once the water warms to above 50.

1. ice out to 40 ..........Jigs
2. 40 to 50 ................Jigs
3. 50 to 60................ Trolling Spinners
4. 60 -70. .................Trolling Spinners
5) 70 and up............. Trolling Spinners

Fish will chase jerkbaits and stick baits in any water temp. Husky Jerks & X-Raps are deadly till ice up, deadly at ice out, deadly all summer long.
