I'm so old, I'm still trying to figure out how lures became baits.

Years ago when we caught a nice fish it was weighed and the story was how much it weighed. Somewhere along the line it seems to have changed to how long the fish measured and the story is told about the length of the fish.

Probably with the invention of real plugs like J-plugs and pencil plugs. To me, a plug is a lure with a curved indented face which gives it it's action and no bill.

Another question: Which came first, calling them hooks or plugs? I still get a chuckle out of guys that call or message that they're sending in some "hooks" to be painted. First few times I had to verify "You are sending in crankbaits, correct"? lol

Hooks is a Canadian term used by Canadians only in my experience. First time we heard it we had to ask for an explanation.

When I was a kid 25-30 years ago, we called the thin floating and diving Rapalas, Rebels and Bombers "plugs". Crankbaits were the short, fat wobbly things that bass fishermen use.
