Default transducer placement

I'm installing a transducer for new Garmin 8612sxv in the hull of 621FS. My question is concerning placement, should I put it right in front of the pumps on the stbd side of the keel? The transducer came with wells, is there an advantage to using wells vs just glue transducer to the fiberglass?
Thanks
