Best was to re-calk outboard hanging on transom

whats the best way to re calk the transom thru bolts while the motor is already on transom?

Peel off as much of the old as possible. Clean area with acetone/alcohol and let dry. Apply very thin layers around the bolts, adding more layers if needed. Then hope and pray you got it.

Best would be to remove all you can, then clean.

Now remove one mounting bolt, clean it out and inspect for rot in the transom. Then fill the hole with 3M 4200 and install the bolt.

Then do the other 3 bolts, one at a time.

Don't use caulk or silicone.

Use 3M 4200.

X2, and when you tighten the nut - turn the nut, NOT the bolt. Turning the bolt to tighten it on the transom will squeeze out the 3M 4200.

Well I had a chance to re seal my transom the other night. Was able to actually take motor right off with a over head hook and chain fall so was able to get at it really good. Went with 3m 5200 black, the regular stuff. Takes 5-7days to cure. It what the dealer in town recommended I used. Any one used this before? I filled holes from inside before pushing bolts threw then I put a good amount around each bolt on back of transom then tourqued motor up. Shouldnt be a issue but it's still in the back of your mind the what if

5200 will work just fine for under the water line.
Its just so much more stronger & difficult to remove.
Think of it as a glue with higher strength & sealer...
I have use 5200 several times as its easier to find.

Well all the playing with motor and props is done and she's mounted where I plan on it staying for good now so as far as removal I don't think it will be a issue. And yes this was easy to find. The waiting 5-7 days tho is kinda a pain tho

I always use 4200 fastcure. No waiting.
1-2 hours and you are back on the water.

what I meant about easier to find is, the 5200 can be found & purchased at places such as Home depot, they have the white stuff in the smaller tubes in the paint department. Whereas the few other box store retailers did not carry the 4200 and I am not about running all over town looking for something I needed now.
The 5200 works fine, just clean up any mess before it cures
if I recall, the 5200 will cure in about 8 hours, I will have to read the tube again
