We tow our 18.5 foot lund with a 2013 Expedition very easily. Our son has a 2018 Expedition with ecoboost and he claims plenty of pulling power. He has an F150 with ecoboost and pulls a 30' camper without lacking power. He says the ecoboost will burn some fuel when pulling, but I'm sure my Triton V10 can burn a bit more. 😉

expedition preferred
We just purchased a 2019 suburban. Prior to it, we owned a 2008 and a 2014 Exp EL. WE ran the 2008 to 175k miles and the 2014 to 140k miles with little or no issues. The 2014 never got good (non towing) gas mileage... The 2008 would get 17 mpg and the 2014 14 mpg. Both the 2008 and 2014 had the 5.4 with the 6 speed transmission. The 2008 had 3.73 axles and the 2014 had the 3.31. The 2014 always felt doggy and I think the 3.31 kept it out of the 5.4's power band which kept you playing with the throttle to make up and killed the economy. I have pulled my 620 ranger with each. The independent rear suspension of the expedition would leave you white knuckled every once in a while - didn't care for that. Power to pull was no issue. I own a F-150 also so except for family trips we didn't use either exp often for pulling.
The new sub was bought based on price. Maybe some of past years GM economic bailout money is has made its way to the showroom floor because the burban saved us over $15k over a new expedition based on best deal we could come up with. We couldn't justify the difference and the chev won this round. The exp 3rd row seating wins hands down - simply more space. Also with the seats folded the exp cargo room seems much larger. The chev wins the creature comfort challenge. Just an overall softer ride and "curvier" interior. The exp feels boxier. The exp suspension is calibrated stiffer but our new sub has leveling rear suspension that adjusts for the load. The sub has a "spongier" ride. With the rear seats in their upright position, the rear cargo area is larger on the sub which is nice for hockey gear... I haven't towed with the sub yet. With the 4 cylinder cut out we are getting 21 mpg at 75mph highway speeds which i am very impressed with. Overall I preferred the exp but I'm getting used to the sub and really like the feul economy. |

let me start by saying I have been a pretty hard core Chevy guy for a long time. Bought a 2003 Suburban and drove it for 11 years, truly one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. replaced in in 2014 with and Expedition EL, switched to Ford because the cost was substantially lower for comparable equipment/features. a good vehicle except for fuel economy, the 5.4 V8 a bit of a gas hog. replaced last December with a 2016 Expedition EL Max with the turbo 3.5 V6. Great motor, tows awesome, (185 Alumacraft Competitor w 150 Yamaha) much better fuel economy. Very happy with this one and plan on driving for many years to come. Again, the pricing on the Ford was much better than the Suburban.

All of my major hunting and fishing trips are in friends Suburbans. They are great for multi-guy multi- dog trips.

I had purchased a '19 Expy this past August to replace an '01 Suburban that, after 187,000 miles, had met it's demise at the hooves of a wayward suicidal whitetail. In due course, I did comparative shop to include the GM full size SUV's, which are fine vehicles in their own right. What tipped it in favor of the Ford was 1) Price-received a much better deal than GM products, especially when I bought Ford had just under 10K in incentives and rebates alone. Overall, I bought it for 16.3K under MSRP. 2) Size- My wife never felt comfortable with the size of the Suburban for getting groceries and such. I felt the Yukon/Tahoe didn't have much more luggage room than some of the mid-size SUV's. The Expy is a good in-between. Relative to room, we felt the passenger room for 2nd row passengers is better in the Ford 3) Options- We bought an XLT with the 202 Package, which makes it a near luxury package 4)Engine-A comparison of HP/Torque numbers between the 5.3 V8 in the GM vs the 3.5 Ecoboost is notably verified when you step on the gas. To get into a 6.2 in the GM's put it into a much higher price orbit that we were just not willing to pay.
