Ceramic Coating On Boat

Had the boat detailed yesterday, they wanted to upgrade me to ceramic vs wax, they wanted $500 more but offered it for $400, I passed after looking product up on line and can purchase for under $75, Has anyone used it. They claim stops stains, acid rain, shields against small pebble nicks.

Also seems to rinse off easy, reminds me of rain-x where water beads off.

Lots of labor involved prepping and applying. That's the biggest cost in those coatings, not the coating itself. Bottom line is that do you value 6-8 hours of your time to do the job right more or less than the $325 in labor they want to charge.

They did all the prep work it was 500 bucks to wash and buff, this would have went in place of wax. They did the wax in less than an hour, seems this stuff applied with foam applicator.

There’s different prep work for ceramic. Paint or gel coat first has to be stripped of any wax or other coatings, all water spots and other imperfections are also removed . Then ceramic coating is applied in very small areas about 2 square feet at a time and hand buffed before moving to the next small section. It’s a very labor intensive process to do it correctly and if done incorrectly, it won’t turn out well and will require sand paper to remove.

There are also different levels of ceramic coatings. Some spray on, less expensive applications that last about as long as wax all the way up to “professional level” coatings that aren’t available for me and you to purchase but can only be purchased and applied by certified shops. As the grades improve they’re more difficult to apply, offer more protection and last longer.

I had it professionally installed on my car and it works awesome. It's quite labor intensive as I understand it and mentioned above. As far as boats, I'm thinking you'd want to go the professional/most durable route as well, as a boat's finish would take more of a pounding from rain/water than a cars. FWIW - $400 sounds pretty reasonable if it's a good/warrantied product and install (do some research). My car cost nearly 3x that.

I've had my boat out on 3 different 4 day trips and have to say its amazing. I wipe down the boat/trailer fenders when pulling out of the water each time and still don't feel like i need to wash the rig. Water just beads right off.

I’ve Ceramic coated the power heads on 4 boats now. It makes water spots easy to wipe off especially on the Verado. I’ve thought about doing my boat and will maybe this winter when I have some time. I’ve personally ceramic coated 8 vehicles and won’t wax again.
