I'd recommend a relatively low-traffic border crossing. For example, Pembina, ND on I-29 would be a pain (especially when coming back into the states), but the International Peace Garden crossing on Highway 281 is much easier (except when returning to the states).
Also crossing at a low traffic hour like Sunday morning makes everything much easier.
