larger tiller boats 75hp and up
Might be in the market for a larger tiller boat but have a couple questions.... Current boat is a 16fter with a 40hp on it. Steers fine no issues. I am concerned a bigger motor would be harder to control and turn especially in rough water? Hydraulic tillers? Does it make a big difference? I've never driven a tiller over 40hp. Have had a ton over the years but most were 25hp and smaller. Wondering how you guys HANG ON!!!????

I ran a 115 Yamaha on a 20' fiberglass boat. Once trimmed to the sweet spot it handled just fine. Anything more than a 115 and I want power steering. My currant 200hp has the Merc Big Tiller handle. That's the only kind I've used.

Hydraulic steering is REALLY nice in that 75-115 HP range but not required. Anything over 115 I'd be going to full power steering. I have a Warrior 1890 with a 90 Yamaha that I put hydraulic steering on when UFLEX offered a Yamaha system. The engine wasn't bad to run without it but the hydraulic system was a really good investment.

I had the same ?'s as you coming from same boat setup also. Purchased competitor 185 with yamaha 90 SHO. Drove fine when you were in the sweet spot trimmed up but was a handful when I was trimmed down in rough water. I bit the bullet and installed the Uflex steering assist now I have no issues at any trim angle motor locks when there is no pressure to the handle even when turning you can let go and it will hold it's course. You only need to add a little pressure to disengage the lock, saves on the shoulders big time.

What motors can the uflex be put on? I love the space of my tiller boats but may need something bigger this year or next as my kids love fishing! If they like trolling green bay and winnebago then I NEED to upgrade.

I have had Lund Pro V’s with either 75 or 90 hp motors for many years past. As long as the water is reasonably smooth the non powered or non assisted motors are fine BUT, get some rough water in there and then you start feeling the torque when going half throttle or less. Arm can get pretty sore after a few miles. I switched over to a Pro Guide 20ft with a 150 hp with the Mertens hydraulic steering. I didn’t really need a boat or motor that big but when I bought it back 10 + years ago I couldn’t find smaller hp boats with hydraulic tiller steering. I have no regrets about what I did and would find it tough to go back to a smaller boat with power tiller steering.

I have a Lund 1725 with a 75 Merc. It's my first boat and it took me awhile to realize how to hit the sweet spot with the trim, but when I do I can take my hand off the tiller and it will drive straight as an arrow. The only issue is in rough water. It takes some arm strength to cross 2-3 foot rollers. That's when I wish I had a hydrolic system.

options
UFlex and Tiller Assist are only options I am aware of. I have Tiller Assist now but will compare to Uflex on next engine. No issues with the Tiller Assist in 3 seasons.
90 percent of the time no assist is needed on my 90 Yamaha but it is sure nice when I do use it. |
