Default Point 1

Sold a buddy a point 1 and he has complained since he bought it, he claims that when he is going down the lake the directional arrow points off to the side and not straight ahead. I told him to re-cal it but he says the issue still persists, the good thing is his map stopped spinning. I got nothing , anybody?

That usually happens from magnetic interference. If it only happens while on the big motor, it may be interference from that.

Yep i agree with Flyinghappy. Have him move the point 1 to another location in his boat and try. Or you can try it on your boat and see the results. Those point 1 units are usually spot on.

I have not had a Lowrance unit for over 10 years so I am not familiar with their menus. I have HB, but there are choices of which course projections appear.(COG or Heading) If going at a speed of 10Mph or more they should match. Another item is when the trolling motor is stowed and the Point 1 is on the bow there is a strong magnet right next to it. Heading would appear good if the TM was in the water but not when running the big motor. If the point 1 is at the stern the big motor could indeed cause problems. Bob

All good info from Ozark. To limit any possible magnetic interference I mounted mine on the gunnel about a foot in front of my console. Away from trolling motor and away from main motor. The point one is amazingly precise.

Try this, from the Lowrance settings menu, go to Network>Device List>Point-1>Configure

Look for the "Local Field" parameter, This is an indicator of the external magnetic influence the compass is detecting. You want a mounting position where this number can be maintained below 30%. On my boat (18 foot), I mounted the Point-1 on the starboard gunnal in front of the windshield. This location gave me a Local Field of 27%. Ignor the value in the picture, this was taken on the bench to show your the screen you are looking for.

This information came from Lowrance tech last year when I was looking for a mounting location for the Point-1.

That sounds like a useful statistic. Check it out under varying conditions.(trolling motor in or out of the water,Big motor at idle and on plane). Magnetic/electrical interference changes depending on what is going on in the boat. Bob
