Default Casting and line breakage ?

When casting spoons with my bait caster I have lost a few spoons (usually my favorite ones) due to line breakage. I am using power pro braid 20# and a swivel probably I should stop and re tie after awhile. So that is my question how many casts before you should stop and re tie or am I doing something wrong. I assume that spining reels would be less likely to have this problem because you dont stop the line no shock at end of cast. But this is why I have a bait caster. Bad feeling when you throw that spoon way out to what you feel is a great cast and the spool stops and your spoon keeps going.

Can't see why you'd be breaking off with 20# braid unless it's very old or damaged -- where are you breaking off, at the swivel? if so, are you tying a palomar knot?

Even a little backlash will break line if the lure is heavy enough. I've even broken 80# braid by trying to cast a heavy muskie-sized plug too far. The abrupt stop will do it.

I've been using baitcasing tackle since 1960.

Try Cortland Master Braid or Spectron, they are a lot more shock resistant than any other braid that I have tried. They are all I use any more for casting with bait casting reels, and I have yet to break it. I use 35# for 3/8-1 once lures and 50#, 65#, or 80# for musky fishing.
I like 10# Power Pro on spinning reels.

Thanks Pale Ryder I will pick up some of that braid and give it a try. It is usually the bigger spoons I throw for Northern that keep sailing and yes I use the palomar knot.

you can try changing brands but it's the 20lb test that is the reason it's breaking. step up to 40lb or even 50lb braid.

I also recommend going up to 30-35#.

There is nothing wrong with a Palomar knot but a power knot is even better.http://gentlemint.com/tack/128581/

I agree with going to a higher lb. test, but there really is a difference in the shock resistance of the various braids.

When casting most guys reel in to the same point time after time. That will cause the line to rest the same place on the last rod guide. I like to throw 14#-17# mono. I will always retie after a good size Pike is caught. If fishing is slow you should retie every half hour or so. Try that and see if it helps.
