Default If you have an Xi5 trolling motor, read this...

Recently I posted that I was having severe interference between my HDS 7 and Motorguide Xi5. After doing a more thorough inspection of the TM, I realized a wire under the pivot point of where the shaft extends up has some severe cracking/deterioration of the casing. I’ve included photos so you can hopefully understand what and where I’m talking about. I’m beginning to think this may be the cause of the interference and a serious design flaw. My TM is only about two years old.

Do you use yours in saltwater. Maybe your motor sits out in the sun the whole time. It could be the picture. Your plastic housing looks faded to me. Out in the sun all the time could cause the plastic wire covers to crack. I will inspect my xi5. Mine does not get used that much.

It’s never been in salt water. In the summer it’s sits in the water in a covered slip. During the winter it’s usually winterized and covered. Never has it been in salt water. I think it’s just the picture because the plastic housing doesn’t appear to be faded to me. Either way, I wouldn’t expect the casing from the wiring to crack. Even if it were out in the sun, the wire is located under everything, completely shaded. I’d be curious to know what yours looks like.
Thanks for the response.

Unless the interference you reference is when you are turning the Xi5 its doubtful the lead referenced in your pics are the culprit. That lead goes to the steering motor only.

Yep, as it turns out I took the entire TM apart today and repaired the wire. You are correct...still have the same interference. At least I got the wire fixed. Very frustrating, I’ve tried every suggestion that people have thrown at me. I’m beginning to think I may just have to live with this. 😞
Thank you.
