I use the blue palate as fish will show up as white marks, I have my sensitivity adjustment up all the time and am making changes as bottom content changed and depth. I speed up my scroll speed as I do not care what is on the bottom or what stuff looks like, with the faster scroll speed it will elongate fish making them easier to see.

When looking for fish along rip rap which can be the hardest to pick out fish I use angles, I will run the boat in as close as I can and angle back out to deeper water as close to 90 degrees as I can that puts the SI bean parallel to the face of the rip rap trying to pick out those fish suspending just off the rocks or at the very base (SI on trolling motor shines here easier to ding trolling motor then big motor). Rip Rap is one of the few places I do pay attention to the structure looking for those points where the rock has slid off the bank or they just dumped more rock in that particular area, because it is the hardest place to pick fish out if they are belly to the rocks.

Picture #1 is a trolling motor screencapture. Note the smearing that takes place when the Terrova turns slightly. For what its worth, I like smears.

Picture #2 is a rare screencapture where I used the zoom box.

Picture #3 is another slow motion screencapture with the Inverse color pallete.

1197s a great unit. I still have my 997 from 08. v4.75 was the absolute best software version for xx7 units.

Ok so now I don't like to fish on a boat without side imagining. Done it but did not like it.

Here are a few screen shots.

The first one shows a sunken boat on an inland lake.

Second one shows a buoy and how the anchor chain looks as it hits the weight on the bottom. This was on lake Huron and note the waypoints ahead which mark a deep weed bed that often holds fish.

The third is a couple of fish that I thought were eyes out in 60 fow till caught one with a harness and turned out to be steel. Yes pulled a harness at 1.2 in 60 fow. I did pull 3 eyes that day a bit shallower

Anyway the side imaging helps especially when trolling large bodies of water where the fish wander chasing bait. There have been times that I will find a pod of eyes mid day on a deep flat bottom area void of structure.
