Crank baits

What crank baits do you guys use. Cranking,trolling,on bouncers or weights iam new to crank baits mostly use live bait rigs or jigs.I have been looking on in fish and anglers edge for info but it can be confusing ,any simple go to methods.

Flicker shads, shad raps, husky jerks, salmo hornets, hot n tots all in a variety of colors and sizes. Probably the easiest way to fish them is to cast them with a 7' med light spinning rod and 8# fireline or to long line troll them behind the boat.

My major use of crankbaits is trolling large areas of "food shelves". On my home reservoir, some of my favorite shelves can have depths as shallow as 3', others as deep as 12'. I spend more attention choosing a crankbait that will tick the bottom without hanging in the rocks too often than worrying about brand, style, or color.

What is the forage base of the lake?

If the forage base is shad - fish short fat cranks.

If the forage base is smelt, fish long skinny cranks.

On Erie
The cranks were hot n tots and wiggle warts
As the water has been getting cleaner with the zerba mussels it's Reef runners or tail dancers these days

I like Reef Runner products, especially the 700 series Rip Stick. Color to me depends on the day and body of water, I use all colors. I would find out more about forage in the body of water you plan to fish and common depths fish are targeted in those areas, always a good starting point.

I too am partial to these runners. I've gotten extremely partial to the bare naked clear with a prism in the middle. Check these out.

What Burr said. I fish Erie mostly and like reefrunner 800 series, rapala deep huskies, husky jerks, bomber long a's and we'll occasionally throw out a big hot n tot and they still pull fish. Wally divers also produce fish.
