Default Ice Fishing Combo Recommendations

I’m interested in getting back into ice fishing and was wondering what rod/ reel combos folks feel are decent quality equipment. I’ll mostly be doing pan fishing to begin with and eventually get into using tip ups etc.

Thanks for the suggestions.

What is it that you will be targeting? A medium action 'Tickle Stick' combo from 13 fishing is pretty versatile without breaking the bank. Generally can be had for under $75 and will handle panfish to walleye/pike. The sensitive tip makes it awesome for those light biting fish, but the backbone is solid when you need it.

For panfish I’d go with any brand name rod and a reel with the fewest parts. Seems like the cheapest spinning reels have tendency to hang up in the cold. Lots of good local shops that are more Michigan oriented than the box stores and a fellow can get lost at Jay’s or Frank’s. Ice is still iffy in the southern third of the LP, better East where they get a lot less snow, pretty solid north of a line from Bay City to Muskegon except on the largest lakes. My kid is on his way home from the Grayling area and they had a good 5-6” there. Solid reports for all areas at the link. Don’t go swimming.

Might try a meat stick or Dead Meat rod with a Pflueger Trion 20 3# line. Or any decent rod with a spring bobber would work.

Any of the following will catch fish just fine:

Or you can go out and spend $150 for a rod and $150 for a reel and catch exactly the same number of fish but you can do it while looking down your nose.

Best wishes.

If I would again take up ice fishing, which I won't, I'd look into getting one of the reels which let out the line in a straight manner, rather than using a spinning reel, which causes line twist, due to the physical relationship of the bail wrap. This allows the line to not twist after it is let out. I'd go with a multiplying gear arrangement, 3/1, or whatever.

Ice fishing in the south, eh?

Not the I needed more ice rods, but just picked up a couple Fenwick HMG rods at Frank's GO and going to pair them with Okuma Ceymar-10's.

Hopefully not overkill with the reels, but we will see. Love the Ceymar reels...
