Tip I got from the guides at Andy Meyers lodge on Eagle. I spayed WD40 on my ankles and back of my hands and it kept them off.
It has worked for me in Wisconsin as well. |

For ankles, high top (like work shoes) leather shoes keep the ankles safe. Also works for mosquitoes.

It's called bug soother. Made in Columbus jct Iowa. Smells like vanilla. Your wife will love it.

It seems to me that spray is the most effective way to get rid of insects.
I also use a similar spray, but the truth is, it doesn't smell very good, but it's tolerable in the fresh air |

Biting flies
Picaridin works, most use Sawyers but OFF has it now and is less expensive. Decent smell and does not hurt mono
