Just out of curiousity, has anyone considered using black locust for transom repairs. I've got black locust fence posts that have been in the ground for for 40 years and are still at least somewhat solid, 20 years that are completely solid. Stronger by far than anything else you'd use, very hard. Getting it might present problems, as would expansion and contraction, but rot would not be a problem.
