My return doesn't look so good, but hard to tell since I just opened my 401k and ROTH this year. $4400 in bi-weekly contributions and less than $400 in gains on Vanguard funds.

I'm in Vanguard Wellington, have been for years. 13.39% this year, I'm happy, be 70 on Saturday. Kinda dread having to start the IRA withdrawals and paying taxes. Been living on SS bennies with no need to draw from the IRA, so no Fed taxes since retirement.
What funds are you in?
Starting the funds at 47 years old............

Vanguard Balanced Index Fund Investor Shares 20%

Vanguard Target Retirement 2035 Fund 50%

Vanguard Windsor II Fund Investor Shares 25%

And company stock, which looks to have performed the best at only 5% of the mix.

That allocation puts you too heavily in bonds at a time when bonds have been doing nothing but losing. Your balanced fund is 39% bonds and your Target fund is 21% in bonds.

The target funds are meant to be all in one fund. If you like it, I would put 100% in that as it will give you a nice allocation and exposure to a variety of markets.

The Target 2035 is 47.7% Total stock market fund which means the S&P 500 plus small caps;
31.2% of the Total International Stock Index; 14.8% of the US total bond market; and 6.3% to the Total International Bond Index.

The Windsor is a nice fund but only if you have an otherwise well-diversified portfolio. In addition, the Windsors fees are more than twice that of the target fund.

I have over $500k in Vanguard and used to have a bunch of different funds. I recently simplified and now only own the ETF versions of the four funds listed in the Target fund.

This is the internet. Everyone who posts buys low and sells high. And they also pay less for a new truck or boat than anyone else:)

Anytime Biff

I have learned over the years the people who always want to talk about how great they are doing in the market are doing what they do best, talking about it.

Now name calling? Not sure why you need to act that way, but I will leave you to it.
