I don't see many guys trolling with a 300hp motor and I don't really care about my mileage at that low rpm. Cruising milage is much more important to me. My last boat was a 1850 Ranger Reata with a 150E-tec. I averaged 4mpg at cruising speed. My current boat Skeeter WX2190 with 300 yamaha gets 4mpg at cruising speed. I know this isn't an apples to apples comparison but I was surprised that I was getting the same mileage with a much larger boat and motor. I also don't miss buying XD100 at $45 a gallon.
To be honest, I don't remember the last time I got passed by an E-Tec. There just aren't many out there on the water and I hardly ever see one. 80-90% of the motors I see are either Mercury or Yamaha. I see more E-Tecs at boat shows than I do while out fishing.
I think that you see so many Mercury motors, due to Brunswick and Johnny Morris. Yamaha following is definitely due to the quality reputation, whether deserved, or perceived. The ETec engines today are very dependable and a great improvement over the two stroke engines of yesteryears.

I like all the new motors, even Suzuki. My only drawback with e-tec is perception at resale. Sure you have a 10 year warranty but the fact is a 2 stroke automatically eliminates half of potential buyers.

I believe that the e-tec, mercury and Yamaha all get identical mileage no matter the hp, when being pulled behind the same truck at the same speed of 80 mph.

Be safe

Scott, that QUICKLY changes once you give someone a ride with a E-TEC.......one of my fishing buddies was going to get a Yammy on his new boat until he went out a few times with me. He couldn't believe the hole shot and how smooth and quiet a new 2 stroke can be.

But your right perception is a strong thing to overcome....... I will always remember Al Linder saying in one of his early day's In-Fishermen TV shows don't go fishing with preconceived notions because it will come back and bite you. I miss those great shows........now I no longer bother watching ANY fishing or hunting shows as they don't have any useful info but are rather info-commercials.

100%. Resale is quite a bit lower than the 4 strokes and often times the e tec is a $1,000-$2,000 more.

If the e tec is so great why have I never seen one on the ocean? Thatís a huge market they are missing.

As told by a couple dealer, they now have a 10 warranty but you have to purchase the rigging kit. Before it was a 5 year warranty and they rigging kit was included

This is one coyote ugly motor......black motor with white side panels and the most important marketing aspect printed vertically instead of horizontally. I guess most Etec 2 stroke owners have a permanent crick in their neck from turning their head to the left to make sure it is their boat. Scratch that, no one else has to make sure....there is only one hanging off of a boat . :muahaha:
