The 15 EFI and 9.9 EFI are the exact same spec if you believe the specs. Same weight, same gearing etc. May as well just do the 15 and be done with it. Probably a different throttle body or a programming/throttle stop change.

And it looks like the 9.9 EFI has a 12 AMP output.....bout time 👍

Have you considered a Mercury 9.9? They have them in carbs or in EFI now. The EFI has a redesigned handle with a handle for FWd/reverse rather than by twisting the handle like the carb model

I have a 2 yr old 9.9 Pro. The EFI has a bigger alternator but EFI wasn't on the market when I needed it.

If I remember to check my slow speed, I'll update the thread.

Happy Fishing!!

The evolution of the 9.9hp outboards came about because of the many small lakes carrying restrictions on trolling - use only 10hp or below.
(You'd be surprised just how common this has become - especially in more urban areas, where peeps swim.)

9.9hp fills that reg without question and the 9.9 is usually prominently displayed on the cowl for the benefit of the wardens, so they don't have to pull up and disturb your fishing.
You can bet yer bippy that a 15hp and a 9.9hp are so close in ACTUAL output as to barely be noticable, so why not avail yourself of legal trolling (9.9hp) without worry?

I am Fine with buying the 9.9 EFI prokicker. I would not upgrade from my yamaha t8 unless I went EFI. Is there any available to buy yet? I might have to start calling around. I use an 8 horse now. So 9.9 efi with the 12 amp alternator would be perfect. Even if I switched to a bigger boat. Why pay for a 15 if you only need a 9.9. I have never ran into a hp restricted lake. I suppose it could happen in the future.

Don't spend much time fishing in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia, Michigan, Tennessee, Pennsylvannia & Maryland-(electric motors only), West Virginia, or Minnesnowta-(county by county, check this list out https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/boatwater/local_regs.pdf )?
'Cuz be assured, those states are VERY rigid about hp/electric-only on their smaller bodies of water (<1,000 acres).
Many, many, others have slo-no wake regulations as well, which a 9.9hp OB will pretty much help you observe.

Only fishing done in Ohio is Lake Erie. Which I had the best year ever beginning of June. Northern Wisconsin never ran into hp restricted lakes. Lake Winnebago system and Lake Michigan Lakes no hp restrictions. Madison lakes. Except for ice fishing once. Never fished them. Waukesha WI lakes to many ski boats to have hp restrictions. Minnesota never fished. Only drove though years ago going to Canadian fly in trips.

i bought the 15 as the 9.9 EFI wasn't available. it does go about 6 mph WOT if my big motor is down and allegedly I should be able to troll it at lower rpm so its quieter and I don't have to run it as hard while trolling...allegedly

I purchased a Suzuki 15 EFI which has a 5 pitch prop. Got my small 14 foot aluminum boat down to 1.0mph speed over ground. Have not had it on my AlumiCraft 185 Competitor yet. Would think it would not be much different speed or slightly slower on the big boat.
Big thing is the prop pitch.
