Default e-bay internet tax

Looks like after July 1 e-bay is REQUIRED to collect internet sales tax for your appropriate state.
Guess the voluntary part of paying it didn't work out so well!
I don't mind so much paying tax on the purchase, it's when they also tax the shipping and handling fee that irks me even if its only 40 or 50c extra!

eBay announced in October it would begin collecting sales tax in 4 states in 2019 due to new laws that extend the tax collection obligation to marketplaces (known as Marketplace Facilitator laws). Note that online marketplace Etsy had already begun collecting such sales tax in 2018.
eBay began collecting sales tax on January 1, 2019, for transactions where buyers are based in Washington and Minnesota, and it said it would begin collecting sales tax in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma beginning July 1, 2019.

This is old news for several states and current news for some.

I got charged a sales tax last week on EBay but it was weird how it was a separate charge to my credit card.....so a $8.99 item then a .79 tax also charged instead of a $9.78 total charge.

Yep, in my case, this trigger a response from credit card fraud dept. , until they were informed it was an ebay purchase.

Theyve charged sales tax for iowa since last winter. They are expanding this july 1 for the states that just passed the internet sales tax law. You can still do it yourself, but if you dont select to charge tax then ebay will automatically take it for you.

The reason ive been told is that ebay is a for profit sales site, you pay to list your item for sale so its a paid service and has to collect tax.

Nothing changes for sellers, buyers will see tax charged when you go to check out. What is getting me is that it shows up as two charges on the bank/cc statement, one to the seller and one to ebay for the tax amount. Sort of confusing until i realized it was the tax.

My guess is it makes accounting and paying the states the tax easier.
