Years ago when the smelt runs were plentiful and we would come back with numbers of the fish - I would clean and freeze a good quantity of the fish. I would put about a quart of fish in a plastic bag and freeze them.
This was when the children were small and we made frequent trips to the zoo.
I had chatted with the zoo keepers about the seals and their meals. They gave us permission to feed the smelt to the seals from time to time.
The children really enjoyed hearing the seals barking and clapping their flippers as they waited for their next fish.
Inexpensive entertainment and excellent food for the seals.
