Default Food loss

My grandson's uncle stopped over today with his car full of fresh vegetables, eggs, bread, mild and other vegetables. Several of our neighbors as well as ourself was able to help him a bit to lighten his load. We weren't able to take it all, but he has some other stops to make on the way back home.

He is part of the staff at a local restaurant that specializes in fresh food stock. He and all of the rest of the staff have been temporarily laid off until the virus effects are over and business returns.

But, the head chef had cleaned out all of the coolers and had them all stacked and told all of the staff that anything that they did not take would be put into the dumpster. They were closing the restaurant for at least the next month- possibly more and the fresh food would not keep.

This was only one of the restaurants in the total chain and of course the same thing was happening at the main ware house. Of course once the food had been accepted by the restaurant, it was not possible to either sell it or give it to any one else through normal channels.

But, now the exact same thing is being repeated at every restaurant, bar, and fresh food ware house that has been closed as a result of this virus. Essentially the very large bulk of these food stuffs will be destroyed with no folks being able to make good use of this fresh food.

Another victim of the virus.

Please be thankful for what you have and please do not hoard. There is plenty to go around as long as one is mindful of their real needs when they go to the stores to make purchases.

Be safe

The resort my fiancee works for just went through the same. They gave all the food and beverages to the employees. We're good on food, so she left it for others, but I do have quite the beer selection sitting outside my back door right now.

Just talked to a friend who is canning stuff like crazy. It can preserve it for 3+ years.

Why would they give beer away? Not like it is perishable.

Loose cans and bottles. They kept all the unopened cases. Just a gesture to the employees since they're out of work earlier than their usual shut town time for the end of the winter season.

Doesn’t beer go “bad” after 6 months or so?

I just looked at a can of recently purchased beer. Expires 6-16-2020, so maybe even less than 6 months.
