The reason I asked about the 6.2 was because one dealer had a 6.2 Trail Boss completely loaded for less than the next dealers 5.3 with a lot fewer options. Anyway, I ruled the Trail Boss out because it only had a payload of 1495 lbs. I thought it would have been higher. Have to say though that after going for a ride in my friends 6.2 yesterday they sure have have some pep.

6.2l definitely. The 5.3l is a dinosaur, it's a big slow V8 and should be discontinued.

Both of Ford's Ecoboost engines have even more pep than the 6.2l though. Chevy needs to develop a high output V6.

I am just surprised that you are putting a truck camping on a 1500? I thought those days were long gone unless they are making some super lights ones now.

I’m interested in a 1 ton crew cab, full 8’ bed. Put a 2400 lb camper in it with a 1875 Impact behind it. I heard Ford and GM were coming out with new big block gas engines. Not sure I need one though from reading about the HP and the torque developed by the 6.2.
I currently pack around that set up with a GMC Sierra 2500 with a 6.0 and it has to huff and puff to get over the mountain passes. I’m not really wanting to go diesel though.

I have reported before. I have a 2017 GMC 1500 crew cab 6' 8" box 6.2, 8 sp. with max tow and 3.73 gears with 32,000 miles on it. It replaced a 2010 1500 GMC xtra cab 6.2, 6 sp. with max tow and 3.73 gears. I ran the 2010 for 81,000 miles. I have used 87 octane in both trucks except for a trial tank in each and it did not make a difference in towing or mpg. Both trucks have carried a light (1700 lbs) truck camper while pulling a 12' enclosed trailer with a 900lb. motorcycle and lots of other "stuff" or a 193 Warrior and now a 219 Lund. I have had at least 20 new GM trucks over the years and my advice is....Buy the 6.2...You won't be disappointed !

Honestly, I don't know why anyone would consider the 5.3. Way less power than the 6.2 and not much difference in MPG.

GM actually lost a sale from me because they only put the 6.2 in the top trim packages in their full size SUVs. I wasn't willing to pony up for another Yukon XL Denali, and didn't want the 5.3, so I went with the Expedition MAX.

Time for GM to up their game and put that 5.3 out to pasture.....

There is definitely some truth to that. But then why stop there? If one is towing a 16 foot boat, you could certainly get away with a V6, especially with an 8 speed transmission, but even with the 6 speed I'm guessing. In Shellback's case, could a V6 tow his boat with the camper in?? Probably. But I'm guessing there are several other variables that factor in, that make the V8 better.

Smaller engines are cheaper upfront, sure. But their resale value is less also. It's really a horse apiece imo.

One thing that I didn't seen mentioned anywhere is, what if you end up upgrading what you're towing? If someone is towing a small tin boat, and upgrades to a large glass boat, that could make a difference. Just putting that out there as a possible reason to buy more than what you currently need (because you may need more later).

I can't speak to the maucho, max hp, max power thing. I don't do it for those reasons. Frankly, I find it to be way more comfortable to be pulling something with plenty of power vs pulling something with "adequate" power. I like that I never have to worry about my truck downshifting on hills. I can tow my 6k lb load pretty much anywhere without thumbing the transmission. And I like that I can use the cruise anytime I want without a care in the world, while towing. It just makes it much easier for me to pay attention to my driving, rather than how the truck is running.
