Exactly what KraTTor said. Had a hang on the gunwale on my old Lund. Just got in the way. My buddy showed me his fold up expandable ladder on the transom and knew that is what I needed on my new Alumicraft. Bolted it on and sealed everything with 3M 5200. Very sturdy. Now I know I can get my fat butt with all my heavy clothes on back into the boat if I ever fall overboard. I consider it a safety feature.
