I have found the softer the bottom the better fish stand out. Messing with contrast and sensitivity makes it happen. Bob

I'm not always running from place to place either. I'll do a quick scan of a few places and if I don't find fish I'll pick a known good spot and fish it relatively quickly while keeping an eye on the SI. Maybe the fish are tucked up tight on the drop or the weeds and I can't see them. But I won't spend an hour picking it apart. Then I'll move on to the next one using the SI to scan on the way and to check it out when I arrive. The quicker I can find fish or establish a pattern the quicker I'll get a tug on the line. Here's a good video from Tom Boley. The part about using SI starts about 7:30 but the whole thing is worth watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j1TshKiBmI |

Depends......
If you fish the same water and know a lake really well, then SI isn't going to be as useful. There are lakes in my area that I frequently fish where I never need to use SI. However, I also like to try new lakes and in that scenario SI is a huge asset.

Me personally would never be without it turn on Si run a transition line, weed edge set waypoints and come back and fish it 2 D would take some time to zig zag back and forth to set way points and if shallow having to run over the fish.Wash board areas on the river make a pass and see if fish are holding there and how many drop a waypoint. Suspended fish nothing like having SI being able to see pods or single fish is the cats meow. Crappie in the summer when they suspend over open water piece of cake to find them, finding sunken trees or cribs and tell instanly if fish are using the tructure..

This will be my third season fishing with my new boat and the locator with the SI, I need to dedicate time to it. As soon as there is open water on the lakes, regardless of opener, would be a good time to scan that structure and mark those spots! At least that's my plan.

On Erie it's a waste of money...............elsewhere it might be different........new waters I can see it being very helpful....... but right now I can fish Erie without a depth finder all together if I have to......but would rather not.

Non-responsive, the OP is from Milwaukee. Got your post count up, though.
We use SI on Erie all the time, it tells us several things. If there are schools to the left or right. If there are fish suspended in the water below or to the side. If the school we were on is no longer there. Different of course, if you drift about hoping for a bite. |

I love when someone that doesn't even own a boat tries to give electronic advice here..........you can't make this ship up.
