Is side imaging a must for finding eyes?

I really like it, I like looking under docks and particularly at structure, isolated rock piles, wood, etc.

not necessary but if you learn it, it helps. down here where we don't have the number of up north, it helps. paired with GPS I really like it. they still may not eat!!

Anybody care to expand this thread with links to some particularly good online SI tutorials/videos? I'll be using Lowrance HDS LIVE like the OP when I get the boat I've ordered, but I'm sure I would learn plenty from other versions as well. I know I've a LOT to learn, being new to everything electronic, after all.

Good idea. Sometimes it is hard know what you are looking at on side imaging

Oh and please not a sunken car or bridge. Real world stuff.

Stuff I learned from guys here.

Go to a spot you already know well and check out how it looks on side scan.

Mess with your color palette until you find the one that works best for your eyes/sunglasses.

Take the time to study the screen while you're on the water even if it means you lose a little fishing time. Sometimes taking 5 minutes after you fished a spot or ten minutes before you head in can teach you a lot.

The default settings are pretty good. Go ahead and mess around with sensitivity and contrast but you'll probably find default is pretty close to what you want.

Take screen shots so you can look at stuff later.

Don't try to see too much water at once. 80' is about as far as I ever go unless I'm strictly looking for features on the bottom. 60'-70' is most common.

If you think you see some fish drop a waypoint on them and cruise over the spot with 2D. Now you know.

This I figured out on my own 'cause I'm a rocket surgeon. Went around a point and noticed some rocks in 20+ feet I'd never seen before. Took a minute for me to realize that fish were a lot more likely to move into an area than rocks were. Yeah, they were fish. Sooper smart.

I pimp Tom Boley quite a bit but I think his vids are really good. His "new lake" ones in particular for using side scan to find stuff. Dr. Sonar (linked below) also has good stuff. I look at his pics at the same time I'm looking at screenshots I took.

One last thing, shadows. Often fish have just a tiny bit of separation from the shadow, not the several feet people like to use as examples. Figure out how to zoom in with your units so you can get a good look.

Edit: don't worry about what kind of fish you're seeing. Learn to see fish and then when you see them in a spot walleye are likely to be you'll likely be seeing walleye.
