Default Hey guys Iím new to fishing and have a question if someone could please help me.

Hey guys so Iíve recently gotten into fishing and been fishing for the past couple months, my friend has been fishing all his life and has been helping me out a lot but since quarantine happened we havnt been able to go out anymore and I canít ask him any questions about it. Anyway Iím wondering why when he fishes he has his braid line that goes through the rod as usually but then at the end of the braid attaches a swivel then about 30 cm of fishing wire then connects his bait. I donít really understand the point of it canít you just use the braid instead of having to add the wire? Thanks guys for your help Iím really getting into fishing and Tryna learn as much as I can about it from home before going out again.

Why can't you ask him? Doesn't he have a phone?

You didn't say what species your friend is targeting while using a steel leader. Is he fishing Pike? Musky? They have big teeth, and would cut the braid with one turn of the head with their sharp teeth.

The leader prevents a cutoff.

More info is needed.

As Juls alluded to, the leader is likely there to prevent cut off. Braid is extremely strong when it comes to lift/pull weight, but is not very abrasion resistant. I always use a leader (the wire your friend is using), what that leader is made from is based on the type of fishing. If Muskie or pike I will sometimes use wire, if walleyes or toothless critters I will use mono or flourish.

More common with Bass fisherman, but many use a fluocarbon leader as it's more difficult to see.

That's if I understand your question

The reason for the wire is, as the other respondent explained, to prevent toothy fish, pike, musky, etc., from nicking the line and causing breakage.
The swivel is used to prevent line twist caused by the spinning action of certain lures, jigs, or spoons.
More info on species you are targeting would be great. The better the info, the more accurate the answers.

The reason I use a leader is to have something to blame it on blame it on when I don’t land the fish. The darn not broke.
