Default 2015 Merc 150 4 Stroke

In Dec. I purchased a 2012 YarCraft 186 with a 2015 Merc. 150 4 stroke. The rig is still at the dealer until 4/18.

Kovash Marine put a stainless on the motor. It's never seen the water. They put on a tempest 17 pitch. They thought that would work , and if not would take care of it.

Is a 17 pitch the correct prop for this rig?

Thanks

Don't know, but it's got to be close.

Probably going to be that or a 19. I'd actually guess the 19 is correct but going to be close. Buddy has a Triton 186 with that motor and he has a 19 on his, that's why I guess the 19.

I tend to agree that it should close at a 17P on that boat.

There's no way to know for sure until you get it in the water with a normal load (fuel/ gear, etc) and see where you are at for RPM's at WOT.

Prop selection is an inexact science and can be a trial and error process. If you are not seeing the RPM's and performance you want at WOT, then Kovash will swap out that prop for you.

But, I suspect they are close.

So would a 19 have a quicker hole shot and lose a bit on top end. What should the rpm's be wide open - around 5700?

Quicker hole shot? No, slower
Lower top speed? Maybe, maybe not
WOT rpm? 5400-5800 would be my target, 5700 would be great.

Your dealer should be willing to swap props of different pitch as long as the prop you have is undamaged. Try the 17 pitch you have, if WOT rpm is over 5800, then try the 19 pitch

I see I screwed up on my last post. thanks for the correction. I will contact Kovash and see if there is a place we can go and give it a shot before I head back to the Twin Cities.

I don't want to make a drive up there and swap props.

I have switched props with a dealer using UPS.

The 17 pitch prop give a better hole shot with a slightly less top speed.

The 19 pitch - especially if it is to much pitch could be a much much slower hole shot and may or may not give more top speed. If the motor has enough power to turn the rpms needed; the top speed will be better than the 17 itch. But the load may be too much for the motor and you might lug the motor so much that the top speed is the same or maybe even slower than the 17 pitch.

Oten, new boat and motor owners only want one thing - the absolute best top speed.

But, then after use = many of those same owners realize that they seldom run their boat wide open, and really wan to have a better hole shot, and a stronger midrange for working big waves.

When they do this, they will typically drop the pitch of the prop with a different prop - to give them the low and mid range performance that they need every day.

So, certainly start with the 17 pitch.

If you happen to be running at altitude - like 5000 feet, you will likely want to drop the pitch even further to 15 or 14 pitch. Without a supercharger, altitude really sucks the power out of a normally aspirated engine.
