Boat trailering question - transom saver?

I'm a relatively new boat owner and have received conflicting information from the boat dealer regarding towing the boat with the motor trimmed up. The salesman said to trim it up so that the lower unit would not hit anything; the mechanic said to trim it up all the way and engage the tilt lock. Needles to say, I don't know what is the preferred method.

Can the experts on WC school me on what's best? BTW, the boat is a Lund Rebel with a 90 Mercury.

My .02, the manuals on my Yamahas say not to use the tilt lock to travel with. I use a transom saver. Either way you definitely want them trimmed up when traveling.

At almost 500lbs for a 150hp outboard... I can't imagine not using a transom saver. That is a lot of weight bouncing around on a transom. Yet, dealers say its ok. All my boats have had them and won't own a boat without one.

I use a MotorMate with the boat/motor in my signature. No problems at all, a little pricey $$$ but I feel it’s well worth the price knowing the motor is well supported and will not be damaged.

Started with an Atwood Transom Saver, but after only towing two times the rubber pads started to rub through almost scratching the lower unit.

I've trailered with a My-wedge( device that goes over your tilt ram) and a traditional transom saver that attaches to your trailer. My personal preference is to have the transom saver on when I tow- distributing the stress and shock to the trailer and not to my transom.

OK, I'll ask...and my manual says nothing about it. I've always used a transom saver. But what is the purpose of the "tilt support" many outboards have (including mine)? A temporary support for use when doing service work?

The tilt support is intended to support the outboard when tilted while at dock.

Edit: and it provides a mechanism to hold the engine tilted if the tilt motor is inoperative, which is always the case for small motors without electric tilt.

I purchased these "Motor Sticks" when I purchased my boat in 2012. Supports my F225 Yamaha 4-stroke outboard motor. Works great, just remember to remove before launching the boat (did that once!).
