OK, so this just sunk in for me a couple minutes ago while looking at my trailer. I read this earlier without looking out at my trailer and it just didn't click in my mind - I'm kind of a visual person so that's not a first for me! Anyway, absolutely get what you're saying, and it might be the most simple option so far. My support that the bunk brackets mount to is 2" x 3", so I'd gain a hair over 2" by that flip. Add that to the extra inch cushion I already have, now I have 3" for the Dorotto to take up and use. I can tell by eyeballing and holding the latch roughly in place, it won't need all of that 3". I'm so glad I asked, everyone has been sharing some good ideas. I'm confident now that one of these solutions will work. This one would mean the boat - though fully supported - is 2" farther back. That would mean the ratchet strap tie downs would need to use a spacer of some sort to extend them out so the straps don't rub on the transom while securing the boat. I have seen folks suggest using some canvas or other type of material to cushion that, so still completely doable. Neat, this is something to really consider.

The Ranger Trail Head of Engineering told me its not the bunk board but the actual frame supporting the bunk he wanted under the back edge of the transom. He said 2" over hang was fine but not much more..so take that for whatever it is worth....maybe nothing....
You might just call Shorelander and the boat manufacturer and ask them about the overhang? just an idea.... Like Ive said before, I ended up putting stairs on and only use the drotto up north for week long trips...the stairs solve a lot. In reservoirs around here, windy wild landings on trailers arent what they are up north...

As for the weight distribution change - this being the case where I added the Dorotto and just "let it ride wherever the boat ends up", they had a bit of concern. The minor one being that the tongue weight would change a bit, but, honestly, probably not enough to worry about. The bigger concern was for my boat and trailer setup, the transom extending off the back bunks by a couple inches was really not ideal. I know we've discussed it already in this thread, I'm just adding for future readers that the specs for trailers and tolerances between companies can definitely be different, so if in doubt, fire off and email to them and find out. |

And, it's installed!
I finally got closure on this issue this last Sunday. Lots of busy things in life kept getting in the way.
So, I did a test install of the Drotto latch with my Dad in early June. We backed the trailer down the ramp, rolled the boat with the winch strap back about a foot and then swapped in the Drotto latch. We then cranked it back on to the trailer with the winch until the Drotto latch caught, and then tightened everything down - just like the directions described. This probably took all of 10 minutes. Super easy. Pulled the boat back off the ramp and went and checked the back of the bunks. Yep, the transom did indeed extend back off the bunks by about 2". So, I was in the same situation as others and I'm glad I started this thread and got the suggestions in case that was going to be how it played out. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time on that first try to make trailer adjustments. I knew I had to pick one of the options discussed here and fit in the time to do it. Finally, this last Sunday, the timing worked out for me to get back to it. I did the same process as before - installed the Drotto latch with the boat winched back about a foot. I then launched the boat and with the trailer empty, went to work. I picked HRG's great suggestion in post #10 here in this thread - reversing the support brackets 180 degrees. This turned out to be the easiest and most straight forward solution for me. When I loaded the boat back onto the trailer, it fit perfectly. I have right at a 1/2" of extra bunk length off the back, so the boat is still fully supported just like it was before installing the Drotto. Very pleased with the setup. |
