This - It's a tough call. I drove back and forth to St. Paul - 200 miles each week for 20 years. I constantly drove at 75 mph - sometimes faster. Man - the train going north from St. Paul in the afternoon takes no prisoners. More than once I had my Corolla wound up to 90 mph+.
I pass and get back into the right lane. But here's the rub - I'm doing my 75 mph (on cruise) and am passing a couple of cars and someone going 85 roars up behind me who has the right to the left lane? I always thought that as long as I'm overtaking the car ahead of me I can stay in the left lane. If I have to pull in between two cars (that I'm passing) I may have to kick the cruise off. No big deal - but the guy running behind me can kick his cruise off just as easy. Sometimes I would speed up to get right and clear the left. After 20 years I never did come up with a good rule... Each instance was different. I think it had a lot to do with how fast I was overtaking the car in the right lane. And yes, it involved mood on my part and attitude on the guy closing behind me. The left lane does not belong to the fastest car on the road - but I do try to move right ASAP. It's not my job to mind speeders. It isn't as easy as just moving right as soon as someone comes up behind you. But the left lane is not for (camping out in by) prematurely gray women with hairy arm pits and driving a Subaru at exactly 70 mph. :p
:exactly: |

Michigan has some laws about what lane you can use but I don't think many know.

Really ticks off the 85-95mph guys though. lol |

I have been seeing something lately that I cannot explain. Coming home from work I have to pull onto a newly done 4 lane highway and enter it turning left and into the left lane (the nearest lane, left merge). So to avoid confusion to drivers already on the road and coming up from behind, I don't make a lane change to the right lane until I am up to speed or know that it is safe to do so.
The stretch of road is usually very quiet as it is a rural area and many times I will see lone cars off in the distance by themselves riding along in the left lane. I don't pull out in front of them but the interesting part is that if they catch up to me as I am speeding up many refuse to just move to the right lane and overtake me and have to slow down rather than just overtake me on the right. And here is where it gets really interesting. If they do overtake me on the right as I speed up they usually move back to the left lane. And many times when I get up to speed they are going slower than me or the other traffic and are sitting in the left lane, and I end up overtaking them on the right. What I am trying to illustrate is there are people out there who think nothing of just cruising along all day long in the left lane like it is a cruise lane no matter how fast or slow they are cruising. All fine and dandy until the traffic gets thick and these idiots hold up the long lines we speak of. |

I just drove 650 miles today. I could tell a few stories.
First thing I want all of you to do is get a gps and check the speedometer in your vehicle. All our work trucks read faster than actual speed. My burb reads faster, our old van did too. Our new Honda is right on. When I set the cruise at 80 on I90 in SD I was still passing everything on the road. So if you think your doing 80, and really only doing 76, it makes us in the 7-8 over crowd look like we're flying. Second- just please pay a little attention and be courteous. Move over when you can, pass quick and move over, and if your behind someone that takes a little to long to move over, just back off a bit and relax. I'll tell you what- the ones that really pissed me off- are the ones who have been following the same car or truck for miles and don't bother to pass until just about the moment I'm approaching to pass them both.:frypan: (Especially a douche bag in a white Audi from Michigan.) I know you can't compare SD interstate driving to eastern states or metro areas, but just pay attention and be a little nicer and check your speedo Last edited by Leinie; 06-09-2015 at 11:36 PM. |

On a lot of roads, the right lane is rougher from cars/trucks driving that lane. People take the left lane for a smoother ride. On I90 I do a lot of passing using the right lane. The car in the left lane stays there. |

These are the real toilet cloggers in traffic. And many other drivers when in the left lane will slow down to the speed of the cars they should overtake if not using cruise. The last thing I want to do in traffic is hang next to someone so I always speed up, same as when I come up behind slower traffic, I step on it to clear them. |

If everyone would drive the speed limit with their cruise control on this would not be an issue.
That's Wisconsin for you. I used to have to drive all over the upper Midwest for work. WI drivers are absolutely worst about this. Only thing I can figure out is that most of the drivers are dyslexic; they think the inside lane is the slow lane and the right lane is for passing. A buddy is from WI and firmly believes that driving HIS speed in the inside lane is hid God-given right and everyone else can go around. Then he gets mad when someone passes on the right and cuts him off moving into the left lane. I won't ride with him anymore, can't take it. |
