Default Night crawler

Last year I fed my night crawler coffe grounds “ like when I was a kid” . The crawler were fat and happy. But never caught a walleye, would give up after a caught walleye on the other rods with leeches. Maybe didn’t have enough patience, but I would catch catfish. Didn’t ever catch catfish before on bottom bouncer. Wondering if anybody else ever fed coffe grounds to crawlers and what were your results?

I THINK that feeding just coffee grounds effect the odor of the worms. I felt that way when I had a bin of nightcrawlers when I was a kid.I at first only gave them coffee grounds I felt I had better results catching fish when I gave them wet leaves,.I think maple worked better,..they consumed them pretty fast,..also occasionally some veggies from kitchen scraps...

Default Crawlers

Feed them corn meal. Pour a couple rows the size of pencil across the top of the bed. When its gone repeat. 5# bag is about $2.

Probably giving off an odor. I used to pack crawlers that I would dig up in wet shredded newspaper until I noticed that I was getting skunked every time I did. As much as I hate using crawlers packed in dirt in the boat, I noticed those seemed to catch more fish than the same crawlers from the same company packed in paper.

They are what they eat.

Cornmeal and table scraps are good suggestions, as are grass clippings, leaves from succulent weeds/flowers/vegs. Stemmy residue with higher lignin content will require more time to break down. Worm casts will supply the N to feed the microorganisms which do the work. Work with the natural cycle.

Back when I lived in Wisco and worked at a bait shop part time, we fed the crawlers cornmeal.

I pick my crawlers from the farmers field next door, probably 4 to 5 hundred over the summer. I use potting soil from last years potted plants for the bed and top it off with coffee grounds and have not notice any difference in my total catch from trip to trip. Been feeding them coffee grounds now for 3 or 4 years now.
