Default I cloud for email?

I just purchased a Ipad mini for my wife and while setting it up for her (she has little tech knowledge) it automatically deferred to a icloud email address set up. She presently doesn't use any email and would not use her phone for email. Is this a easy and safe way for her to get started with email? Her use of the ipad is mostly for internet and games. I don't use the cloud for anything at this time but it appears others do. Please enlighten me.

No different from google gmail, or yahoo mail. I also set up a icloud email even though I will probably never use it. I think you need a email address for your sign in username for itune and app store. Might as well have her use the icloud email addy.
