Rebore a Yamaha 115?
On annual trip to Kabatogama. Buddies boat acting badly. Repair place thinks it might have a scratched cylinder. Any idea how bad ($$$) to fix. Yamaha 115.

GBS,
If you have to rebore one cylinder in a 4 cylinder engine, you want to also bore out the sister cylinder in order to keep the motor in balance. The rebore of two cylinders, new pistons, and rings and labor will be about $300-$3500. Good luck p.s. But, before doing a rebore on an engine - you really want to figure out why the one cylinder had the problem. If you don't solve the problem - you will likely get another early failure. In particular, you want to insure that the engine oiling system is in 100% perfect order. |

2 or 4 stroke ?
What year ? Carb or efi ? What do you mean by "acting badly"? Why assume a scratched cylinder ? I most cases, before I would take a motor in for service, I would; Replace spark plugs, even if they look good. Replace fuel filters. Check fuel line and primer bulb.

GBS,
What is the compression in each cylinder. What is the leak down value in each cylinder? Take care |

Back from the wilderness, and at a real computer....
All I know - 2004 Yamaha 115 4-stroke, 4 cyl. The story: First evening, motor was generally OK, but sounded a little rough at high end. Dropped about 400 rpm after a bit of running at full throttle (5200 rpm, dropping to 4800). Next day, for the first 30 sec, would run fine at about 5200 rpm, then struggle to maintain 3800 rpm. If brought back to idle for 15-30 sec., would again blast out of the hole at 5200, then sag to 3800 for the rest of the running time. Sounded like it was struggling, but if throttle was pulled back, could even it out and hold it at 3800. Stopped at local 2 man repair shop, bought Ring Free to add to the gas on their recommendation. Ran 3/4 tank of gas through it with no change from the above. Next day, hole shot good, but after 30 sec, now sagged to 2600 rpm. Otherwise same behavior. Took it into them, and they found a rusty plug and an injector missing an o-ring. Replaced all plugs, and the injector. Plus, they decarbonized it. Their tank was not big enough for full power run up, but were sure they got it. On the lake run, same behavior, but rpm better, "only" again sagging to 3800. Service guy came to lake, and hung over the back checking pressures during what passed for high speed runs. No issue found. Back to the shop, where he took apart the lower unit, thinking there was some kind of binding. No issues. Pressures at the fuel rail were fine. Leak down test was fine on all cylinders. Piston pull test showed a bit of leakage on the #2 cylinder (the one that had the rusty plug). Hence speculation about a scored cylinder. Next morning on the water, no hole shot at all - max rpm was about 3400, sagging to 2000. We went to a nearby spot at 6 mph, dropped the TM, and caught several walleye and a few jumbo perch. Then putted back at 6 mph. Trailered up, and boat headed to it's home in Rochester. Owner will take it to the dealer there for a more extensive workup. Lots of posts on iBoats about Yamaha's behaving this way, and there appear to be several root causes. Just hope the guy doesn't get turned off by the issue/price. That would mean the guys will depend on my boat for the annual trip! (which is fine, but his is much nicer, and my old Johnson 2 stroke drinks a ton of gas). 7 days at Kabetogama, 5 guys, 2 boats, but with three of us "benched" for almost 3 of the days. Still caught 180+ fish. The guys found one spot on one evening, where it was like Canada - literally a fish every time you dipped leech in the water. No reeling needed. Approx. 45 walleye in a couple of hours. Bummer, I was on the cabin deck at the time because of the boat issue. And the next day, the spot was dead. But, I got my limit other times and places, and then some, so all is good. |

That sounds similar to a problem I had with my Optimax. Turned out to be bad spark plugs. All 6 we're bad. Also the gas line was collapsing inside causing a drop in fuel pressure. Only ever did it on the lake. Maybe it's not your problem, but a place to look. Good luck.

Did you have it at Voyageur Marine? They are pretty good wrenches there.

Please give us a report back when the problem is fixed, and what it required. Inquiring minds (this mind with a F115) want to know!!
Thanks Bill |

More than pretty good! Paul (the owner) was outstanding. After the first repair failed, he refused to take any further payment. Special trip to the landing to try and sort it out. Then offered to let us fish till late evening, and work all night to dig into it. On his own did another open water test. Just ran out of time to keep working on it. Several locals launching at the landing greeted him, and HIGHLY recommend his work and buying boats/engines from him. Even overheard him advising another customer on what additives to use, and telling them where they could buy them cheaper than his place! I would seriously consider the 6 hr drive from the Cities to be worth it to have him work on my boat, if ever needed, in the future!
