Use a waterproof case. When enclosed in a case my iPad overheats and shuts down if left in the sun.

Generally, I can't see anything on the screen if the sun is out so I hold under the dash in a shadow in order to see the screen.

I would recommend a used unit to NMEA/Ethernet together over a tablet.
