Default Yamaha T8 cowling

Hello all,

Any chance someone has a cowling for a T8 laying around? Have no idea how but mine fell off today on the way back home from Mille Lacs. One of those freak things I guess.

Thanks!!!

That’s happened before. The latch in back opens up. Known problem with the t8s. If you search on here. There are a few different things people have done to prevent it. I used a plastic coated wire cable hooked to the cowling. I think others have used plastic zip ties on the latch. The zip tie might be the best idea.

Hi Steve,

Oh those pesky T-8 cowlings. Been there done that. I just hope mine didn't go through someones windshield. Lost mine back in the spring, somewhere.

I couldn't find one so I got my numbers, set up a chat with a lady at this web site, https://www.simyamaha.com/Default.asp and a week or so later had a brand new cowling. I didn't like spending the money but, what do you do? At any rate, on my new one I drilled a hole in the locking clamp/latch and put a screw in it so it can't come open again. (The screw was advise from a Walleye Central person).

Mine stayed on for 13 years. No idea why it came off. Hope you find a good deal. Sim Yamaha seemed my only option and they were great.

Good luck.

Paul C.

After reading of the frequent detachments, I just run an insulated heavy copper wire( from house wiring) up from the handle and wrap it around the starting rope handle.

Thanks for the info. I honestly had no idea this was an issue. Been on there 4 years without incident.

This is what I did after the suggestions of some forum members here to keep the cover from flying off and discourage / slow down theft.

Tamper proof stainless screw. I purchased at Lowe’s

Drill carefully. Counter sunk to make it look right. I can’t remember the size but want to say #8 x 1 1/2”?? I cut it down so it doesn’t go too far into the engine compartment.

Mike,
Good looking fix.

However, with all of the reports of lost cowls, it would seem prudent for Yamaha to create a different cowl attachment system that would preclude the loss of the cowl.

Take care
