I had my best luck with the Milwaukee Fuel Series. Went through a Dewalt and a Makita fairly quickly.

Make sure a hand drill is the way you want to go. Both my buddies with K-drills like my 40V Strikemaster better. It is just a lot easier to drill with, has a 8" hole (theirs is only 7") and the batteries aren't as susceptible to the cold.

Just throwing it out there...I know a lot of guys use the brushless Fuels too.

I use a k drill 7.5 inch. Haven’t had a problem getting a fish through the hole. No problem drilling holes either.

Here's a few reasons:

-By far, the hardest part about landing a big walleye is getting its head turned up into the hole without ripping the hook out of his mouth. A larger hole helps you do that. In general, a larger hole will help you get any fish up on the ice easier. Some will say they never have problems with a 6-7" hole, but ask the guy who just set the hook on a pig what size hole he wished he had, and he'll say the biggest.

- More room for your transducer

- When fishing tip-ups in the cold, holes will shrink. Starting with a larger hole is better.

Default Milwaukee also

I too went with the M18 for my K-drill (https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Produc...rivers/2603-22).

I bought both at the same time from an authorized Milwaukee Tool/Repair Center, and was told at the time of purchase that ice fishing was an unauthorized use of the tool, and if ever brought in for warranty, the repair technicians would be able to tell???? if it had been used for that purpose. She suggested if I needed a drill for ice fishing to purchase the "MudMixer" (https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Produc...rivers/2603-22) a more heavy duty Milwaukee drill. I thanked her for the recommendation, and purchased the drill I had originally intended to purchase. I got to thinking afterwards that even though K-drill primarily recommended Milwaukee equipment, no where did Milwaukee ever mention that use.

In one full winter of use last year, I was impressed with the drilling capabilities of the K-drill (the 8 inch auger). However, I did experience several instances of shut down with the Milwaukee drill where it would just quit working. I assume the drill was overheating, because after several minutes of inactivity, the drill would again work, and would again overheat after repeated activity, and I had to wait until it cooled back down before it would work again. It was not a battery issue, it was a drill issue. This usually happened after drilling 6 or 7 holes consecutively.

I have on order one of the mud mixers to try it out this year. I love the compactness of this setup, everything fitting in the sled and covered up while UTV/snowmobile transport across the ice.
