600 Tekota on boat rods 700 for board rods the 700's the the gold standard for planer board fishing they are winches and pull in musky with ease as well as large hard pulling baits or big blades at any speed.

Rod 7 ft Ugly Stik Tigers in Medium, boat rods 10 ft Ugly stick Big Waters Dipsy rods.

I use this setup on inland water in Ohio and St Clair.

Most charters on LSC run tigers and 700's.

Saltists LC have a higher gear ratio than the tekotas so they don't winch in baits or fish with as much ease as the tekota.

I'd also go with the Tekotas over the Saltists for that application. Saltists are awesome, but as mentioned, they're too fast for what you're doing.

You could also look at Daiwa Sealines in the 47 and 57 sizes. Not as nice as the Tekotas, but a bit friendlier on the wallet (and similar gear ratio).

The Tekota's are the best out there (IMHO). I use the 500 size but I know many guys like the bigger ones. The new 500 has a much-improved drag so if you like the smaller size its worth checking out.

Rods can be as basic or as fancy as you want them too. I have Thorne Brothers custom e-glass rods that go for $225.00 I also use these for live bait. Saint Croix and others make nice mid-level op[tions or if you do want to get that fancy Shimano TDR's, Ugly Sticks and many other will work.

If you want the best, buy tekotas, if you want to spend $100 or sometimes less and have a reliable workhorse of a reel then buy Okuma coldwater reels. I have 4 seasons on my coldwater reels and haven't had any issues with them. I haven't even had them cleaned. I split my time between casting and trolling so they aren't really being abused by any means but they work great. If one ever breaks or malfunctions I may replace with a tekota.

As far as rods go, I mainly use Custom X trolling rods. I also have a Black River rod that works good but it certainly isn't a custom X by any means. I have a shimano TDR trolling rod that works well also and was very inexpensive.

What size & weight do you use? I'm using a 8' 6" & a 9' 6" MH TDR

The reels are Lew's round 600

Happy fishing!!

Happy fishing!!

8’ heavy power medium fast action. It does the job as a cheap trolling rod but I much prefer my custom x trolling rods.

This is a li'l off topic, but related:

What distinguishes a good trolling rod from a not as good trolling rod? By "trolling rod", I mean it's life is in a rod holder when trolling. if I'm holding it & trolling, no way would I use the TDX then

TDX? 30 bucks
Custom X? 190 bucks
Others? 100+ bucks & I've seen some over 200

I've never been much of a troller but am really starting to find it quite enjoyable actually so far for musky

Happy fishing!!
