Default Can a 36 volt trolling motor run on 24 volts

I just bought a Ranger with a new 36 volt Fortrex on it. I don't want the motor, as I really liked my Ulterra on my old boat, but it is only 24 volts. Thinking of taking the 24 volt Ulterra off my old boat and putting it on my new one. That would be the easy part, just by pass one of the trolling motor batteries. Could I put the Fortrex on my old boat with a 24 volt system?

Just wondering.

Yes, a 36 volt trolling motor can be run on 24 volts.

Default will it lose power?

Thanks Stratos219. If running on 24 volts instead of 36 volts, will the 112 pound thrust drop down to say about 80 pound thrust? That would just make sense to me.

I would guess that is the case. I had a 36V that I ran on 24V for a few years on my old boat. worked fine. but I never ran it on 36V for comparison.

Running a 36V motor on 24V will work, but you'll lose considerable power and efficiency.

My brothers 36v Minnkota 112lb was wired incorrectly, only having 24v . It was not equal to 80 lb at all, in fact it barely moved the boat at all.

Why not swap the batteries too?

Default Not much room

In a 2005 620, the batteries are in the top compartments, taking up a lot of storage room. I think in 2006 they started putting the batteries in the floor.

It will not work well. If you absolutely have to do this call Minn Kota and ask then first of all if it is a safety concern and maybe what are the downsides of doing it. It is more complicated than turning the dimmer down on incandescent bulbs. Modern day trolling motors are no longer simple DC motors. Bob

Thanks Bob, I was thinking that may be the case. It may work for a while, but like a brown out, could do damage after long exposure. I decided to just put the 24 volt motor guide back on the boat and sell the 36 volt outright.

Thanks for all who responded
