Abu-Garcia "The Beast" is on mine. I actually called their customer service as a sanity check & the gave a thumbs up for musky fishing

I might have downsized a little too much though. I think a size up would've been better in reality. But it is what it is & I'm using them. https://www.abugarcia.com/products/r...34170386317451

(I liked the 25# drag feature)

Happy Fishing!!

I own a 301AHG for almost a year now. Never lost a side plate, i guess it's just a way you hold a reel. But... There was some strange sound coming from the reel after a fight with the big Pike. I send it back to Shimano just to get reel back with the same sound. And now after a few more months of use the sound is even worse!! Not sure is it a ball bearing or gears or something third...

I have 2 Tranx 400’s in both gear ratios. They are great, also have a Daiwa Lexa 300HD a nice reel with 65lb braid, but I have my sights set on the new Daiwa ProRex 400 in 7.1

Not many reviews on it yet.

I've had good luck with all the reels I've owned actually haven't broke a casting reel yet, I have had some issues with linecountes after much abuses'.

I always liked Penn reels and they are my goto spinning reel for a couple applications so probably going to grab one of their new low pros'

I'm spooled with 80# Suffix 832 on 4 Abu Beasts. So far, they cast great & pull in anything I'm throwing with ease. Earlier complaints about side plates falling off might have been fixed. I have a version 2 for whatever that means.. Very smooth..

Just picked up 2 Lew's Speed Cast Round for trolling (down rigger rods). Slow with a 5.3 retrieve which I'm not really concerned with. They feel silky smooth also, but are still virgin rods

Take my opinion with less than a grain of salt--- I have yet to net a musky!!

Happy Fishing!!

Also whatever you do don't buy a daiwa Lexa. They're the worst musky reel for the price. Very unreliable.

The Abu Garcia Toro S isn't a bad reel but the tranx is way better. The Toro beast is definitely not worth it vs the tranx considering it's the same price. Other than it looks cool it doesn't have anywhere near the same build quality and my buddy had to very regularly clean his to keep the noisiness down.
Plenty of 400 Tranx reels with issues, I had one it was fine, but drag loosens on them from time to time, cost me a fish. My beast actually casts better. I can bomb a bait further than I want to reel it, amazing casting.

Also, the Lexa HD is build FAR better than the regular grey lexas.

500 Tranx is a tank, THE BEST reel on the market period also the most expensive.

FWIW...

This was a known defect that has been corrected. I lost a giant last year because of it but have used the reel extensively this year after sending it back to Shimano for repair and have had no similar issues...

I have been using 3 Lexas 300 and 400 both have provided flawless performance for years.

In thread #13 I ask if anyone had any experience with the new Daiwa Prorex 400TWS. Well after a little more research I pulled the trigger this afternoon using a 10% coupon code from Cabelas VIP Club Week postcard.

But I didn’t purchase the Prorex I purchased the NEW 2021 Daiwa Lexa 400Tws in 6.3. 60 bucks more but hopefully worth it. Now I need to team that up with another Musky rod.

Does anyone here have this reel and if so please share your opinion about it.

Thanks in advance,
Cover Dog
