Bowfishing growing in popularity, but does it actually improve water habitat?
DNR has no hard facts yet in Minnesota, but any bowfishermen out there, or fishermen who frequent a bowfishing destination, see any differences in game fish populations or habitat?

Why would it?
The numbers of fish caught and killed by bowfishing is a tiny tiny fraction of the typical number of fish in a body of water. The tiny number of fish relative to a total fish population killed by bow fishermen is so small that I can't imagine that it would make any difference. Be safe |

I see commercial fishermen remove semi trailer loads of Carp at a local lake and the population never seems to get any smaller so I doubt a bunch of people sliver gunning a few thousand fish is making much of an impact. |

All good points, gentlemen (sans zeebee and his hashtags and typos). Anecdotally, I hear bowfishing guides claim they're seeing a fraction of carp in community lakes versus 10 years ago. 60- to 100-acre lakes--is it making a difference? Maybe. I've heard a couple DNR sources claim a healthy sunfish population is key to lowering carp population, as sunfish swoop in and eat carp eggs. Maybe bowfishermen are making this easier. Maybe not. I think we can agree it doesn't hurt a lake--it is a nice afterthough for an enjoyable night hunting.

Thanks for sharing. How often did you see this? It isn't uncommon for serious bowfishermen to pull out a flatbed full of garbage cans loaded to the brim with carp a couple times each month. But again this happens on the Mississippi (and I have little faith in bowfishing making a dent there) and larger lakes (again, same thing). Still, I like to think on a good night, when we pull a couple hundred pounds from a community lake in Metro Minneapolis, we are making bass fishing easier for some youngster and his grandpa. Maybe that is super naive, and it obviously isn't the main reason we set out.

I've never noticed carp being a big problem on a lake. They are a nuisance species in Michigan, don't rise to the level of invasive. Is it that big a deal where you live?

Was, or is a show on outdoor channel {bottom feeders} about netting carp, very interesting.
