I've checked my transom and still seems rock solid with only a little water discoloration seen after I removed the top cap (still solid no soft spots). I've since resealed cap/screws properly. Does it matter that my boat has always been trailer kept and covered and only at 500hrs on it?

Good care of a boat always helps of course but there's been plenty of well cared for boats that have experienced transom rot, and not just Lunds either.

To get the most out of your wood transom replacement, make sure it's coated in an epoxy resin, seal your top cap, and seal all your bolt and screw holes with high quality marine sealant. It will be far better than factory.
I think the marine industry has acknowledged the drawbacks of wood and most are now moving to the no rot composite transoms or complete aluminum transoms

I seem to remember back in this time period that the state of Minnesota had a problem with the disposal of the wood that the marine industry was using. Lund stopped using it and tried using a different process. I wonder if all the manufactures did the same thing? That is about the same time that Ranger stopped using Crestliner hulls.

I am not claiming this to be the total problem, but I do remember hearing something about this.

You are correct.
Continuing on.... soon after Brunswick purchased the GENMAR boat lines (Lund, Crestliner, etc) changes were made: 1) The wood was changed to the closest thing available to the wood used prior to the State EPA rule on waste... 2)The waste began to be shipped out of state.
3) The transoms got a "Lifetime warranty" to original purchasers.
(That change in wood and warranty upgrade began with 2006 model year Lunds)

Hey T Mac

I have an 2006 model year 1800 Pro-v SE that was manufactured Nov 2005, last 4 digits of S/N are K506. I am the original owner. The screws on the top of the transom cap on the starboard side won't tighten and I am starting to see some dark brown staining around the starboard scupper. Will Lund warranty it. I live about 40 miles from New York Mills.
