Default 2005 Mercury 2 stroke

I'm considering buying a rebuilt 2005 merc 2 stroke oil injected to put on my 2004 1650 rebel ss. I've never had a motor that was oil injected only motors I've mixed the oil myself. Should I trust the injection system? Is it possible to take off the injection system and mix oil and fuel in the tank without any issues? Thanks

I've had Oil Injected Merc's... 1999 40hp Merc for 5 years and a 2000 90hp Merc for 10 years...NEVER a issue. Used Pennzoil, West Marine and Quick Silver oils...which ever was on sale.

If the Mercury oil pump is correctly synchronized with the linkage, it should serve you well. I've heard many people complain about the old Evinrude/Johnson VRO oil pump system, but virtually no complaints about Mercury. Many of the VRO complaints come from people who don't understand how that system works and wrongly put the blame there.

you'll be fine with the oil injection. I had a 05 150 hp merc that had oil injection and it worked great.

With a few isolated issues with OMC back in the late 80s, and as said ,likely not even the real problem, oil injection systems have been used without issue on outboards for decades. No concern, especially with Merc's system.
Much better than premixing. Use a good brand of oil, keep the reservoir topped off, no issues.

Keep the injection system. My dad has a 1989 Mariner 100hp, which is a Mercury product, and his is still going strong. I'd hate to deal with mixing gas if it wasn't necessary.

On a stock motor the Merc automatic oiling system has been extremely reliable. The only problems I've heard about is on modified racing outboard engines which operate well above the rated rpm of the stock motor- in the 7000 rpm and higher range. On these motors there have been some oiler failures, and most of these motors now have the oiling system removed and run with mixed fuel in the tank.

What size motor is it? My brother has a 50HP 3 cyl Merc/Mariner tiller on his 16.5 ft Sylvan, moves it quite nicely across the water with 2 people on. Trolls down to 1.8mph.

Motor is a 60hp. I need to decide if I want this motor or my other option is a Johnson 48hp that's been total rebuilt. It's going into a 2004 Lund rebel 1650ss. The 48hp is $1500 cheaper then the 60hp

Likely that Johnson 48 is an old OMC Johnson 48SPL ("Special") ? An economy no frills version of the OMC Johnson 50hp. If so that would have been from back in late 1980s to late 1990s. Would not have oil injection or even power trim, unless the trim was added later. Would probably be enough power for your 04 Rebel, because they were pretty strong motors. But it's an older OMC Johnson ,not Bombardier. If the 05 Merc is in your budget would be a better investment and more age appropriate for the model/ year of the boat, (Newer than your boat, not 4 or more years older than your boat) and likely easier to get parts and service quick in a pinch, not to mention power trim and oil injection and 10hp more.
