Troller 71.

A person has a paid for 2-stroke motor that fits all of their needs as long as it starts, runs and stops when needed. The motor cost about $2K when new.

To replace the motor with a similar 4 - stroke motor in 2021 will cost about $10K..

Is the new motor better? Of course it is better.

But, if you have a 2-stroke motor that has not seen a huge number of hours and don't plan to spend hundreds of hours on the water in a year, the 2-stroke motor can satisfy the needs of many many boat owners and fisher folks.

There are a lot of folks that have really good uses for $10K - especially, if they have a motor that will power their boat for their particular needs.

Best wishes

Those engines were and are junk, there is a reason certain technology hangs around and other stuff fails. If this guy wants to struggle with this nightmare carry on

The motor is 21 years old. A year younger than the exact same on my boat, which has been flawless. Things wear out, but at this age, it's hard to classify it as "junk". In this and his prior thread he has been stymied by an incompetent mechanic, who does not know how to test and evaluate subsystems in order to isolate the problem, One who prefers just replacing things to "see if it works", charging him for the time and parts.

I hope his search for another bears fruit - someone who knows how to properly evaluate it, test it, and can back up the repair recommendations based on that. That may take some additional money for evaluation, but in the end he can decide whether the total cost is acceptable to him, or not.

motors far from junk, as stated above i have an 82 mariner 2 stroke i will put against any 40hp 4 stroke. i dont have 20 grand for a new 4 stroke....anyway onto the boat issue. we hooked up a small 2 gallon tank amd the motor ran flawless. hook back up the the stock 22 gallon tank and will not run unless a guy keeps filling the carbs with the primer bulb. we installed a new pickup tube, new fuel line all the way to the motor. new inline filter, new bulb. compression of the motor is good all around, the pulse line for the fuel pump is working great bout ready to install a low pressure inline fuel pump to help...unless anyone else knows what to try...im all out of ideas.

Is your vent line clogged? Run a new vent line while your at it. Seems like you already isolated the problem being the onboard tank.

GBS,
The typical outboard motor should run with few problems for at least 2500 hours.

Many fishing boats have their big motors that don't get 50 hours per year of use on them.

At 50 hours per year and a life of 2500 hours that is 50 years.

So, as long as an engine has compression and sound bearings, no reason not to use up more of its life.

Absolutely, without a doubt a new 115hp 4 stroke of any of the manufacturers would be really great.

But, they also come with a $10,000 price tag.

If you just want to go fishing for a few times in the summer, when you have free time, why would you want to go out and spend $10,000 on a new motor if the motor you have now, does an adequate job for you, when you have kids that need to go to College at $20,000 per year or more?

HUH??? from what, did you conclude that GBS was recommending a new motor?
