Default Marine 2 Way Radio Help

Just checking to see if this is something I should have in the boat for emergencies. Planning on fishing LOTW and not sure if I should get a handheld or not? Amazon has one from every manufacturer out there so its one of those can't see the forest though the trees when figuring out what I should get.

I expect cell coverage to be minimal from past experiences.

Any ideas would help..

Hand held not much use. Coverage only about as far as you can see. If your truly concerned about communication for safety, I'd recommend renting a satellite phone. One guy Mike Borger said he used some type of garmin that sends text and email anywhere.

Mikes report: "Garmin inReach device with me for safety, it allows you to send and receive emails and texts anywhere off the grid"
