Wow, what a timely thread for me given that I just picked up my new (and first) boat!

When I bought a trailer hitch in anticipation of the boat’s arrival (and there was plenty of anticipation to go around, let me tell you!), I went ahead and got a nice one: a Weigh Safe adjustable hitch with built-in tongue weight gauge. It’s really slick! I suspected thieves might think so as well, so I also got the company’s locking pin to secure it to the hitch receiver.

Silly me, I thought that was all I needed to do - I forgot about the trailer, itself, or worse, the boat and trailer! You folks have opened my eyes to the fact that I need to do something to secure them, too. Thank you very much!

Seems to me the most sure way to secure them would be with a chock lock on one of the trailer’s wheels. Do y’all agree? If so, can anyone recommend a particularly good one? This is definitely NOT something I want to skimp on, so please focus solely on dependability, not price, in making your suggestions.

Thanks again! (Wow, how many other important things have I absolutely boneheadedly not tended to, yet?)

Gerry

Why would anyone need more than 1 chock lock?

You guys know that if you’re joking around about something, I’m still too ignorant about all kinds of stuff to necessarily tell that you’re not being serious, right?...

You need at least three.

One or two locks and just zip the lug nuts and throw the tires in the vehicle and deal with the locks later and steal the the trailer on the two remaining wheels.

Pretty Rangers trailer sell fast...

Yeah, I'm yanking your chain
Go enjoy the boat.

When I leave my trailer and/or boat unattended I put a trailer ball into the coupler and then lock the coupler. The ball I put in is just the ball part; I cut the threaded shank off of the ball so there's no way anyone can hook up the trailer to a vehicle.

I know it will stop the casual thief; the real scumbags could probably find a way to make off with it but that's what insurance is for.

Good idea to lock just the ball in the coupler

Anybody here have experience with the Brahma Wheel lock? It looks very good to my relatively uneducated (but rapidly learning) eye, about as secure as heavier, more expensive wheel locks, I think, but more portable when not in use. Love to hear from some more knowledgeable folks...

Gbin, you have to weigh the aggravation factor for all of this against the chance that it will get stolen. Go out to the boat launch and take a gander at all of the trailers. Most will not be locked, or will only have a padlock.

My recommendation: Lock the coupler (the part that you snap down to lock the ball into place), lock the hitch pin, and make sure that your insurance will cover the electronics on your boat.

You can go crazy with it, but ultimately you just need to stop the honest thieves. They'll move on to an easier target. If you're actually targeted, there is a reason, and whatever steps you take aren't going to stop them.

I have a pin locking the hitch to the truck. I never take the hitch off. I have a Tri Max wrap over lock that goes on the boat trailer when it is not hooked to the truck or RV. The Tri Max prevents anyone from unbolting the ball from the trailer. I have a pin that also locks the trailer to the truck when connected.
