Powder Paint Jig Heads questions

I bake my drugs before painting them at I think 375 and then that’s when I bake them out after I paint them

I guess I should’ve checked before I hit send. I bake the jigs before painting them at 375°

Usually too thick or heat is too high. I generally put the pieces in the oven while just starting to warm up, then ramp the temp up to the directed cure temperature. When the oven hits that temperature, then I start timing the cure.

Also, do not trust the temperature setting on your oven. They can be off by 20 degrees or more. Always use an oven thermometer or IR temp gun to verify the temperature.

I will try a lower setting on my heat gun, the orange peel effect is happening right after I swish the jig head in the powder bead

Heat is definitely the problem then. When you dip your warm piece, you don't want the outer layer of the coating to be melted. Only the inner layer that is adhering to the jig. The outer layer that you see should still be "powdery" and dull. The oven is what is going to melt everything and fuse it all together like smooth glass. What I do when heating something to dip and get that just right "melt" is get a repetition of how long to heat it, depending on the size/weight. 1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000, flip it, 1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000, etc, then dip,. I make a chart for different stuff I powder and how long to heat each side of the piece.

This is a small operation ran by 2 entrepreneurs/ fishermen in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan. I ran across them at the Ultimate fishing show in SE Michigan more than a decade ago. I buy from them at the show and from their website. I bought all of my Pro-Tec from them, their own design (affordable) fluidized bed with interchangeable bed basins. I also purchase most of my paint and jigs from them. I have no vested interest in this plug other that wanting to pass on info for this post.

Its always good to patronize fellow fishermen too!!
